I have found this year’s World Cup to be more entertaining then I believed prior to this summer. For starters I love the dynamic time zone differences bring because I get to wake up at 6:00 AM and watch a pair of nations from different corners of the world square off. All games have either started at 6:00 AM, 10:00 AM, or 12:00 PM MST. This allows me the luxury of watching a match, heading out on a run and returning to home watch to another match while I eat some buttered toast. The World Cup this year has truly helped me wake up excited each morning as I anticipate something rarely available in the United States; quality football matches.
I loved seeing the Spanish super team square off against the dazzling Cristiano Ronaldo in a 3-3 draw that truly had it all. I eagerly cheered for Iceland as they stifled Lionel Messi and Argentina in a 1-1 draw. And yet none of these games top the moment when Chicharito bagged Mexico’s second goal in 2-1 win over South Korea. These nations have very little in common but do share a common goal. This goal comes down to making your country proud and bringing home a shinny gold trophy.
France, Iceland, Mexico, and Nigeria have some how found their way into my hearts for this World Cup. I love watching the young, talented, and flashy French squad tear it up on the pitch. Pogba has been one of my favorite players for years but his country doesn’t have a chant nearly as eye catching as Iceland’s viking chant. This Icelandic team are the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup. Each player in this squad may have the heart of sea monster (I mean that with the best of intentions) but they certainly don’t look as good as Nigeria. Nigeria, hands down the best I have ever seen. Man those jersey’s are dope.
